“Enter” the key on the right side of the keyboard. I’m going a little different on this one, kind of combining one of my first entries into the world of RPGs. It came with finding old disks and an old family computer. Text adventures, and there might have even been a copy of ZORK. It was an entry to a strange world, a world that required imagination because it didn’t give you all of the details. The economy of words used and the lack of realistic graphics for you to meet the adventure halfway. It wasn’t passive entertainment, hell even our passive entertainment, the fantasy movies of the 1980s (and later the fantasy TV shows of the late 1990s) weren’t great, they weren’t multi-million dollar finely curated, carefully scripted, and beautifully shot features we have today. Even they needed a bit of imagination to see what they could have been. We were generally disappointed, but we didn’t get presented with anything that was much better so we were happy with what we got as potential imagination prompts. So we imagined what was actually happening, we read between the lines in the hope that we’d get an understanding of what the writers and designers actually had in their heads…and every one of us would have a different interpretation that meant.
