  • I think the choice of game was very good for this challenge, as it has a small scope but there are still plenty features that you can choose to implement. With a few feature additions I think this can make for decent entry to your portfolio Gameplay My experience I could not spot any major game breaking bugs although the game would reach certain states that would cause it to soft lock and I had to restart. This is due to the missing Options and restart flow implementations that are missing and there is no "back" option. Other than that, the core gameplay had all the basics needed to form a simple game loop (movement, enemies, shooting and health). Unfortunately the enemies would only shoot towards you but would not move and didn't have any AI behavior which took away from the experience. Even a simple implementation with randomized movement and shooting would have improved this part a lot. In terms of progression and reward, it would be nice to have at least a simple scoring system and power ups (which are also mentioned in your document). UI/UX It would had been nice to have the game precompiled so we can run it directly but that was not a big issue to be honest. I really liked how you modified the base project to form your main menu - simple but it works! Having said that, the Options menu could had been "disabled" to avoid people going in. Regarding the game, the movement and shooting felt intuitive but the lose conditions, did not. To me it was not clear that you shouldn't allow enemies to go past your spaceship otherwise health is deducted. A simple text tutorial or UI layer would have helped make that clear. Features I think this might be the weakest point of this project as there isn't much. You can score some easy wins by implementing a score system (along with powerups) which will then allow you to create leaderboards. Add some music/SFX and serialize the leaderboards locally and suddenly you have 3-4 extra features at hand. Add some simple AI logic and you can have a little fun game. Creativity, Design & Originality Although the idea is not original, you it can definitely be turned into an enjoyable experience. You dev diary was detailed, explaining what work was carried each day and what problems you faced and solved. Consider using source control for projects as it will help you with development and tracking history. Additionally, if you use an online system (e.g. GitHub), that is an additional bonus when people review your CV. You can also add GIFs or short videos on the game page so people can see a preview of the game. Jason Tzaidas (Rocksteady)
  • Release ZIP is messy and you have to build the game yourself Rather buggy - had a crash to desktop and multiple different soft locks Love the main menu design Warnings in the compile Good developer diary Good starting point, but has not progressed as far as some of the entries.
  • Adapting the rings into the menu selection is a cool and unique idea, especially using the rotation code to show what is selected. Great job on adding the game states and keyboard inputs! I would have loved to see some win/lose states to really bulk out your game states and add some more complexity.
