  • Assessor: Anthony O Donnell – Art Director @ d3t Title: Left 4 Dead Diorama Research and Development There was no documented evidence of research and development. An image was provided of a blockout showing an iterative approach being used. Creative Art The image contains enough to be identifiable as a post apocalyptic scene at a glance. The floor looks newer and less worn than the surrounding elements. This makes the image a bit inconsistent in terms of detailing and intent. The wood grain is large relative to other details in the scene and appears to be one large board as opposed to individual boards. Generally a gritter and sharper look to the textures along with a harsher lighting setup would lean more towards a horror aesthetic. Technical Art There is some variation of values to define surface properties. The floor , walls and ceiling were baked instead of using tileable textures which would have allowed for more flexibility with mapping, better reuse and be more efficient. Documentation There was no document provided Final Presentation The final diorama is good simple idea, executed well and clear. Generally it doesn’t capture the sharper and grittier visuals of the game.
  • Individual elements are well modelled and textured but I feel the image as a whole lacks a clear focus. It's unclear what's the important element here (the table? The door? The medicine cabinet?) and the pipes added at the top and bottom are distracting without adding much to the scene. The scene would have gained a lot of atmosphere with more chaos and grime: a worn-down wooden floor, rubbish under the table, empty pill containers on the ground... More story elements would have helped give more context to the scene, for instance blood stains on the floor, a loved one's photo pinned on the wall, empty spirit bottles... Lighting could also be a lot more dramatic, with most of it coming through the door. This is a good starting point for something that could be refined a lot more.
