  • I thoroughly enjoyed the game. It fits the theme well as you are the sword who doesn't want to be wielded. The game was fun with the bickering and the text puzzles. I like the artstyle and the music that went along with it.

Yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarise your game!
Mean Sword is a Text-Based RPG that puts the player in the point of view of the legendary Excalibur. You will combine a mouse-selection-based dialogue and skill point system with conversation checks and a typing minigame to ward off unworthy heroes, until you can guess at one of them being the fabled King Arthur and convince him to pull you from the stone to save the British!

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
This game fits the theme of "You are the Weapon" by putting you in the shoes of one of the most famous weapons of all time. But the wielder of a weapon is as important as its power, so in this game, we sought a different take on what it means to be a weapon by focusing on the act of choosing the right wielder, with a bit of a snarky and comedic twist.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
Our team members put a lot of energy into making music, art, and some fun moments of dialogue that we hope you will enjoy! Open to any and all feedback as this is our first time making a game. Thanks for taking the time to play it!

The selection of words to type was a little too repetitive and I'm not clear on how the skills play a part, but I really enjoyed the narrative and environment of this game. Great art!

There were occasional bugs with the response selections rendering. Grabbing the scroll bar would make them appear as expected.

Hi curbsideaudio, thank you for taking time to play and give us some feedback! Acknowledged on the scroll bar issue, I tried to find some fixes to that but couldn't get it to 100% functionality before our deadline, but was glad that it was a minor bug and not game breaking. We appreciate you calling it out so that we know it is worth troubleshooting if we continue to iterate on the game after the Jam. We also appreciate the note on word variety; with more development time, we would have liked to add more variety there as characters and dialogues progress. On the skill front, maybe having a brief tutorial dialogue that explains mechanics bit-by-bit would have been helpful. Still, we appreciate you taking the time to play and enjoying the art and narrative!

A tutorial would be great! Even a modal with a brief text description giving some guidance would be helpful.

But all around, it’s one of my favorites from the jam so far! “Words as weapons” popped into my head during the ideation phase, but I couldn’t think of a way to leverage it. You did!
