  • For your first game, this was pretty fun. The very first, and most glaring issue I have, is the character is basically invisible at the start of the game and at the start of the second screen. I had no idea where I was. Maybe a border or something to help the player know what he's controlling would be super helpful. Thank you for the submission. Keep at it!
  • with such a linear game I would maybe try to add some sort of danger to it. to make it more exciting and some urgency

Yes

Tell us about your game!
Light The Shade is a very simple, minimalistic platformer where you control a little shadow guy named Shade. Your job is to navigate Shade across several layers/levels of a dark cavern and make it to the end.(currently only 3 levels). The platforming is pretty straightforward, using A/D or Left and Right arrow keys to move and Space to jump. The only thing illuminating the cavern is several torches and if you fall into the void you are sent back to the very beginning! The game is very short and the platforming can prove to be tedious and a bit janky at times.
Please play in Fullscreen!
The game has scaling and resolution issues that was a result of me not originally not building it as an HTML5 Game. Playing it in Fullscreen has been the only way that I've found you can properly play it.

This is my first game I've ever developed! What an experience it has been learning Gamemaker, making art in Aseprite, and using FamiStudio and Audacity to create sounds. This has been an incredible opportunity and I had a lot of fun making my first game and participating in the GameJam.

Extra Notes
I made all of the ambient cave noises with my mouth...

As a friend of the Dev I'm a little biased, but great job with your first game! With what little time you had to put this together you've done quite a lot with little experience.

The cave sounds were really good bro I had no idea they were mouth sounds lol. Enjoyed walking my little guy, even tho I couldnt find him at first. Tbf, it's kinda sad there's no checkpoints, I fell in a hole and was back to the first level. or maybe that was intended? no idea (btw I'm not a judge I'm just a guy)

Developer

It's only a very short demo so there are no checkpoints. It was intended to send you back to the beginning. Thank you for checking it out!
