The theme "its spreading" inspired the mechanics for the game and story.
For the game: It is a turn based RPG where you have a second resource to manage: "Disease" You lose if it hits 100%. The idea is to encourage the player to not waste turns and be motivated to learn to take down the enemies effectively with a resource that is constantly ticking up encounter after encounter.
For the story: The story features a tree that is growing, thus spreading, and taking over a town. The tree has created this disease and its up to our hero to chop it down! This is a prologue to a longer story.
Also, I was inspired by fear and hunger. Each enemy has a unique set of limbs and weaknesses. Even though I made it, I found myself finding new techniques on how to defeat enemies while taking less and less HP and disease damage. Combined with the dance that comes from needing to "Queue" actions instead of executing them immediately and it becomes surprisingly fun and deep!
