  • The choice to have abilities hidden behind little trials is a good one, it reminds me of games like Ori and the Blind Forest, and Hollow Knight where you get abilities by reaching areas or finishing tasks. That being said, I wish you had focused more on that outside of the story or boss fight. The lore you made was already a little complex from the get-go. The player has to learn a lot of new words, and understand this world in a way that they may not if the names/places aren't familiar to them. Additionally, the length of narrative at the beginning was a slow start. Either reducing the amount of things the player had to learn, or making the story more 'shown' than told, or even breaking it up into discoverable pieces might have been better for the scope of the jam. The game did have a few bugs - it crashed on launch for me, then launched without music, and finally I managed to get caught between two platforms during a jump (most likely trapped on a pixel). Additionally, the dash ability didn't seem to work, and I felt like I could already double jump without going above. Since there was text on the bottom right saying I hadn't unlocked the abilities, I assume they were meant to be unlocked as I went through the game. Also, the scrolling as I jumped up was a bit jarring, perhaps shorter sections to scroll through might have helped with that. The boss fight was challenging because of the limited angle of shooting, as well as the I liked the simple visuals of the game. The character was clear, I liked the sliding ramps platforms most. The music choice also worked reasonably well. I saw the UI bug, but once I knew what it was about, it wasn't a huge deal. Overall, it felt like a game that could have benefited from a smaller scope - a simpler narrative, and either the abilities mechanic, or the boss fight would have made for a more complete experience. That being said, if you're still working on the game, I can see a lot more of its vision on display here - more of a cross section than a demo. So that means all of its potential is on display. I hope you work on making something inspired by what you learned during the jam!

Sorry for the late reply, it's been a hectic week for us all! Regarding the pixel art of your game, overall I think you guys did a great job. My only suggestion would be to simplify your design a bit. The game has a very pixelated Minecraft feel currently, and I think it would benefit from a reduction in the amount of shades being used in each section. I've added some images to explain what I mean as I know that may not be the best way to describe what's going on. With pixel art, less is always more, so don't be afraid to just color block your design and then go through and add shading, texture, light, etc. where it's needed the most!
