You slow down your spaceship by spending energy.
There are energy orbs flying around that you can collect to refill your energy level. Once you've stopped slowing down (either by choice or after running out of energy), these orbs will get attracted to your ship.
While you are slowing down, you are vulnerable to high-speed asteroids, which take away your energy.
So essentially, everything revolves around the slow-down mechanic
