Judge feedback

Judge feedback is anonymous and shown in a random order.

  •  I want to congratulate you for the amazing work you have submitted here. Since this is the VFX category I will provide feedback accordingly, but I cannot ignore the animation skills you have showcased. Please understand that this rating above is strictly for the VFX part of the submission and it does not reflect on the quality of the project.

    VFX:

    • There is not much accent put on the effects as they are. Intended purpose or not, I would have loved to see more color, more particles being used. I don’t think they would have taken away from the animation’s impact, but rather enhanced it and added more of a personal touch to the whole submission.
    • The way the effect is timed and built is great in terms of technicality. The fact that the animations portray the use of this effect gives any viewer from the industry a clear picture of its functionality and to some extent, versatility.

    Animation:

    • Straight off the bat there is a noticeable exaggeration on the breathing which can become tiring for the viewer. He  seems to be panting rather than breathing. You can tone it down a little bit and it will still be visible that he breathes.
    • There is a clear subtlety to all his movements which are well defined and well put together.
    • The distance of travel seems adequate for the intended action and what I appreciate a lot is the build up for the action being well defined and giving a good sense of weight.
    • The idle pose on the ground seems subtly forced, not so much cocky and confident as uncomfortable. This you can easily change or adapt to adjust the feelings your character sends off to the viewer by adding more behavior specific for the intended state of mind (a yawn, a laugh).

In terms of the pre-production and production presentations, I am pleasantly surprised to see a well documented and well presented piece of work. The multitude of tools (including issuu and Sketchfab) you have used to frame your work shows great attention to detail and the fact that your work has a logo, a signature of the artist on it shows that you are aware you are a designer and your duties do not stop at just creating a product. Keep the writing style, the simplicity and honesty of it, since it bodes well with all the detailed research and clearly thought out presentation. If I were to change one thing it would be the academic approach the document holds. Make a design to incorporate the requirements of the academic paper, but frame it in the style of the entire project.

*takes off an imaginary hat* Keep up the great work and good luck!

PS: No matter what the requirement is, always include a portfolio link in everything you showcase. Don’t forget you’ll be earning your bread and butter this way.

  • Rating solely as a VFX entry, I like that effects elements are used & they tie in well with the animation, but what's there is quite basic and not really enough to give a good assessment. The VFX side is only briefly covered in your documentation too - would have liked to have seen more on your process & decisions!

Excellent as an animation piece though!
