Short description of the game
A first-person exploration game, exploring dysphoria through the lens of body horror.
Theme
We explored the feeling of longing for something within your own self and the struggle of identifying and finding that missing piece.
Development Process
There are three nationalities represented in our team, Irish, Russian, and Slovak! The four of us are working together for the first time, and we quickly fell into a really comfortable workflow that allowed us to showcase our individual strengths while still getting to practice with new tools and explore unique ideas. We experienced a slight language barrier, but nothing majorly disruptive that we couldn't overcome! This project is also reflective of our diverse team, from its eastern European-inspired setting to the name "Folamh" which is the Irish word for "Empty". Our aim with this project was to allow players to experience the discomfort of dysphoria, and the biggest development challenge we faced was finding simple ways for the player to connect with the player, which inspired our character creation mechanic. By allowing the player to choose elements of the main character, it creates a false sense of control over the outcome of the game, and it can help the player to become invested in the emotional experience that we are trying to create.
