  • Submission Title:                                  Cayce – Dimension Detective

Submission Tier:                                   Search for a Star

Assessor: Anthony O’Donnell          Lead Artist           Firesprite

     Concept design & Development:

Development of the character and her world was really well researched and in-depth. Clear evidence of research that informed the final look the character is evident. The production plan was great to see and sensibly defined. The exploratory sketches are a quick and efficient way to narrow down design choices and clearly helped to shape the final look.

    Technical Art:

The correct normal map format was used. Channel packed textures were also used and setup correctly. Polygon count is appropriate and well distributed. The Zbrush workflow was good.

Clear and defined material values are present. Appropriately sized texture sizes for character and props is good.

    Creative Art:

The artist has developed a well-designed character which has also been produced well.  There is a consistent level of stylisation across the character. I really like how the artist respected the research and allowed it to define / guide design choices along the way. The final colour palette and body type and clothing style are the key elements that make this character stand out and all work cohesively.

The additional props designs are also well considered and in keeping with the overall aesthetic.

The stylised texture work shows understanding of colour and restraint in its use. Material definition had an appropriate amount of noise variation for this art style but crucially increased the contrast amongst the various surface types so elements were clearly defined and stood out.

     Written Documentation:

The written documentation is well presented and goes into a lot of detail regarding the artistic choices made. It also clearly covers the production process.

     Final Presentation:

The final character has a lot of personality / life and is well made. The images are all posed well with consideration to the characters personality.

  • Top marks. Blown away by the quality in every department. Well done! Love the subject matter too, that you didn't go for something too cliched. Excellent research, documentation etc. Efficient UVs and textures, and great stylistic sculpting. If I had to be super critical maybe to find a better pose for her, as she looks a little awkward in some of the angles. Great work again - bright future ahead!

  • Caleb - I love this! A great piece of design, simple but effective and great to see that you've thought about all the elements and a back-story to help define the character design. The various stylistic influences are obvious and I particularly like the 50's female proportions which the character exhibits (a nice touch!). The document breakdown is first rate and it was great to see a project plan and such detail in the breakdown, even down to the use of the rig and blend-shapes. You should feel very proud of your efforts and if you continue to grow and develop as you have during this project, I predict a bright future ahead of you. Well done!! :)
