Racial Justice Bundle ImpressionsPage 3

a collection by M. Campbell · last updated 2023-11-10 02:59:15

I'm going through the games that catch my attention in the Racist Justice bundle and sharing some impressions, mostly to motivate me to actually explore this stuff! These reviews are going to be quick first impression type stuff, so let me know if I didn't give a game a fair shake and I'll return to it.

Rating scale is:

5 - Incredible game. Could become a favorite.

4 - Really good. Will play regularly.

3 - Solid but not mind-blowing. May dabble with.

2 - Unimpressive. Won't return to.

1 - Bad! Stay away!

This is my biggest surprise of the bundle so far. I was initially not super interested in this game because it looks like a cheeky Zelda rip-off and... okay it kind of is a cheeky Zelda rip-off. But it's also pretty interesting. It incorporates rougelike-ish elements and some unique design that makes it feels less like LttP than you'd thinking looking at it, and the story is more engaging than I expected it to be. I've heard it's short, but it's procedurally generated and there are a lot of alternate modes so I imagine you could get a good amount of time out of it. 4/5

An impressionistic little game about cross-breeding alien flowers to make new alien flowers. This is a YMMV thing for sure, but as someone who's really into these sorts of "experience" games, I like it a lot. It's soothing and beautiful, and the central flower mechanic adds an interactivity and creativity a lot of similar games miss out on. It's also strangely addicting. And apparently your flowers grow when the game isn't running, which is a smart way to keep me motivated to continue playing it and see how my island develops. I do wish there was the ability to travel between multiple islands because the island itself is really small, but that's the only thing I'd change here. 5/5.

Hey this is rad! A rougelike with a LOT of really unique, clever mechanics and a delightful Cartoon Network art style that outdoes Doublefine at their own game. 4/5

Super pleasant farming game a la Stardew or Harvest Moon. On first blush it doesn't seem like it has the depth of something like Stardew (but we'll see), but it's tremendously soothing, is wonderfully diverse and queer, and it's nice seeing this sort of game moving its setting beyond "generic modern farming" into space! With gene splicing! 3/5
