I built this game in 3 days using Unity to showcase my game development skills.

I coded this with a decoupled design, SOLID principles, and Game Programming Patterns. This allows for low cognitive complexity and high scalability for a long term project.

Bitter Silver(released 2023) is a visual novel inspired by Cowboy Bebop. I Engineered, Built, and Published this game to Steam for Lookout Drive Games. We had 11 credits total on the project and I worked with a team of 5 developers with various roles. It took a year to develop.

I was the principal programmer, so I had a lot of responsibility. I designed and implemented the functionality of all UI and menus.

Programming in this project was interesting because I had never worked on a service-based architecture before. Naninovel is an engine extension for Unity that has many backend features for developing visual novel games.

The engine didn't have all the features I needed to update some UI elements in real time. So I had to get my hands dirty and learn how to extend from the architecture, as well as find and access data that the engine used to render UI elements in the game.

I programmed the game and created the sound and music. I worked with an artist that goes by Ceratina for a 2-week competitive game jam: Gamemaker's Notice Me game jam in 2022. The game is a top-down roguelike representation of The Backrooms inspired by Kane Pixel's videos.

Programming the gameplay was tricky. For level generation, I modified a maze algorithm James Buckley created called Blobby Recursive Division. The AI state machine was designed to give players an easier time reacting to surprise encounters by delaying chase while pushing players to progress by revealing them when they are too passive. I optimized performance for the line of sight algorithm by culling non-visible walls with raycasting.

The Backrooms is a creepypasta, which are horror-related legends posted around the internet. It started from a photo in response to an anonymous user on 4chan asking users to post "disquiting images that just feel off".  Someone described the original Backrooms photo as "where you end up when you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas", which was a reference to Doom where you could fall out of the level into places you shouldn't be. The concept has grown since to a universe of unique disjointed liminal spaces.
