HOLY FUCK!!! I read the whole way through tonight (because I’m making it a habit to read more) and I was genuinely jawdropped. Like, I’m being serious about this: this was beautifully disgusting in a genuinely good way. It’s a mystery the whole way through giving me mixed feelings (in a good way)—like, is this torture or is this survival training? Is this death or life? As in, is the mermaid is trying to teach the protagonist the power of the desire to live and then proceeding to truly allow them to live by turning them into a mermaid!? Honestly this story also gives me the lesson of “never kill yourself,” and I know that sounds ridiculous, but I am serious! The really uncomfortable descriptions of the pain and sensations also sucked me into this, how the protagonist went from fear and pain to relief despite the “human reality” (I’ll call it that) that they’re dying painfully. This was fucked up and beautiful at the same time. Thank you for writing it and thank you for sharing it in the book drop.
