List of the games on Itch that impressed me this year. In no particular order.
I've played a few found phone games this year and this one stood out.
Abrasive fiction game on the themes of present and coming financial crises. This game does not lie about not giving a fuck if you're comfortable with it.
Surreal game broken up into multiple play styles.
Eggs.
Enjoyable platformer with an interesting hat mechanic using physics.
Took a while to reveal it's true face but when it does, damn!
Was looking forward to this one as my father was a funeral home assistant when I was a child. Enjoyed seeing the trade presented in a positive light as the important service it is and not as a gruesome joke. Could of been longer but got the point across.
Disturbing interactive fiction game that asks you to contemplate what counts as sentience.
Touching story of a mother watching her child and friends explore their talents, feeling proud but also some shadows of regret.
Amusing homage to the mighty donair. Quickly dives down a Frog Fractions like rabbit hole.
In high school we did an exercise in English class where we wrote a letter to our future self discussing our hopes and dreams. This game is like the reverse of that.
Yang finds the most amusing ways to portray gay conventions and history. Intense risk reward system. The gun shaped members are a clever commentary on censorship, especially as a response to the reaction to his own games.
Creepy story and beautiful hand drawn art work.
Excellent context based puzzle game. Love the concept and excited that a larger version of the game is being developed.
Funny, mysterious and some times thought provoking. Conveyed the anxieties of the generation behind me more clearly than some news pieces. Great music and art work.
Thoughtful survival game with a heart. Think many of us can relate to wanting to just board a raft and float away from our islands of stresses. Excellent soundtrack as well, worth listening to on it's own.
Devastating vignette about trying to maintain a sense of stability in the face of a coming disaster.
Equally amusing, cute and disturbing. This interactive zine playfully portrays anxieties of living in the online modern world. And the bunny blobs are adorable.
