Who Dares Rolls recommends

Games reviewed or previewed on Who dares Rolls and recommended by us.

A game about fashion, travel, and everyday magic.

This was a really fun game, with as much emphasis on moments of calm as there were of weird calamity. I really want to return to the world we made one day.

You are a criminal bear with two stats: CRIMINAL and BEAR.

Yeah, we all know this one's good. You're a bear and you do crimes. You also weat a hat. Who needs to hear anything more? Well, you can if you want by checking out my review: http://www.whodaresrolls.com/rpgs/honey-heist/

A storytelling game of creeping cosmic horror.

Lovecraftesque is possibly one of the best Lovecraftian roleplaying games out there. You collectively control one character as they uncover a mystery. The group hold a fragment of the mystery privately at first and leap to conclusions with each scene, drawing the elements together into one mystery no one knew ahead of time but that felt inevitable. It's almost poetic. Read my review here: http://www.whodaresrolls.com/rpgs/lovecraftesque/

They took your life. You got away. They want you back. Run!

I love how this game handles momentum as you play psychic amnesiacs on the run from shadowy forces. I played an X-Men: Days of Future Past hack and wrote my review here: http://www.whodaresrolls.com/rpgs/psi-run-days-of-future-past-a-hacked-review/

The city must fall.

A game of dodgy drow revolutionaries in an occupied city. A kind of high fantasy 2000AD crossed with Necromunda. I only ran a demo during the Kickstarter, but want to sink my teeth into it again. My preview write-up is here: http://www.whodaresrolls.com/rpgs/spire-preview-blood-and-dust/

A RED WET HEAVEN SLUMBERS FITFUL UNDER THE CITY OF SPIRE

I do not care for dungeon crawlers normally. This brilliant RPG made me love them. As a bunch of desperate souls, delve ever nearer to the red, wet heaven and encounter all manner of beasts. Borderlands, Bioshock and Annihilation all crammed together in a darkly funny package. My preview is here: http://www.whodaresrolls.com/rpgs/heart-preview/

Adventures in the Wild Blue Yonder

As far as I'm concerned, this is one of the best ways to sell people on an RPG. It's a self-contained one shot adventure. It's a swashbuckling sky-sailing romp escaping from an evil empire, finding (or fighting?) a pirate king and navigating through sky-squids. It's free and an essential part of a game collection. My review is here: http://www.whodaresrolls.com/rpgs/lady-blackbird/

Quickstart Rules and Adventure

7th Sea Second Edition is a great swashbuckling game in a fake Europe. I loved the first edition, but this one pushes some slightly more indie ideas and has made the fictional Europe less problematic.

I thought this demo was lost, but apparently it still lives here. It acts as a really good preview. I got to be a player for it any my session reports are here: http://www.whodaresrolls.com/rpgs/7th-sea-preview-part-one-deploy-the-swoon/

Daring scoundrels in a haunted city

Possibly one of my favourite RPGs. I started a short AP series on Who Dares Rolls, also explaining the mechanics as I went. I think I was one article away from the end and lost my file. Check out the first two parts here: http://www.whodaresrolls.com/rpgs/blades-in-the-dark-part-1-welcome-to-duskvol/

And here: http://www.whodaresrolls.com/rpgs/blades-in-the-dark-part-2-how-to-heist/

Should I continue this series, despite how long its been? Let me know!

Something's wrong with the world and I don't know what it is.

The grandaddy of the Powered by the Apocalypse movement, Apocalypse World is really good fun. I've yet to run using the second edition, but reading it, my recommendation of first edition only applies more now. Read it here: http://www.whodaresrolls.com/rpgs/like-mad-max-why-not-try-apocalypse-world/

Make sure he has a good time, okay? Please.

Writing a session report for this was really difficult as I was laughing all the time. You're playing a group of minders who are making sure Jason Statham has a nice holiday. Hijinx ensue. Really good fun. Beward chandeliers. My review is here: http://www.whodaresrolls.com/rpgs/jason-stathams-big-vacation/

You're on a big adventure, but your head keeps falling off.

You play as skeletons, which should be review enough. Five stars, move on. Grant Howitt makes it even more fun than that, with delving into civilisation to get what skeletons believe to be treasure and trying not to lose too much of your body. My review is here: http://www.whodaresrolls.com/rpgs/adventure-skeletons/

An award-winning story-telling game inspired by cinematic tales of small-time capers gone disastrously wrong.

Just as messy as the original flavour Fiasco, this card-based version gets to the action faster and provides plenty of great prompts to help folks as they build their game. I can't wait to play more of it and to see what they do next. My review is here: http://www.whodaresrolls.com/rpgs/fiasco-in-a-box/

A mini-RPG on scavenging supplies from a zombie infested mall

A game about zombies... only it's more than that. A very simple political game and a great way of using game mechanics  to demonstrate that. My reading review is here: http://www.whodaresrolls.com/rpgs/quick-rpg-reviews-ihunt-mall-zombies-and-terps...

Killing Monsters in the Gig Economy

A fantastic modern look at monster hunting RPGs and what feels like a true successor to Hunter: The Reckoning and Hunter: The Vigil. The style is wickidly funny, visually engaging without being too busy and made me enough of an instant fan that I had to back the iHunt Patreon. My reading review (I'd not played it at the time of writing) is here: http://www.whodaresrolls.com/rpgs/quick-rpg-reviews-ihunt-mall-zombies-and-terps...

Wander through an endless, distorted mall!

I've not played the prequel to Green Dawn Mall, but it looks like a really interesting taster of the world. I'd already backed GDM on Kickstarter, but this confirmed to me that it was going to be a great experience.

Teens exploring an endless, distorted mall, looking for their lost friend

A brilliant, surreal mall-crawl. My group fought our own cursed equipment to play trough this and bring back their friend alive. Each area in the mall was vivid and strange. A wonderful experience which I'm looking forward to trying again. I reviewed it here: http://www.whodaresrolls.com/rpgs/green-dawn-mall/

A tabletop game of high octane adventures in a post-western world, by Kevin Allen Jr.

A fun, chaotic experience which raced by for the group. You'll need to print out some reference cards, but its definitely worth trying out for some freewheeling drama. I reviewed it here: http://www.whodaresrolls.com/rpgs/trouble-for-hire/

Earth-shaking battles for the fate of the world, played with dominoes

A domino-based game about two warring factions, usable on its own or to represent mass combats in other games. I used it for a massive battle in a fantasy camapaign. It was great, even for an uncoordinated oaf like me. My review is here: http://www.whodaresrolls.com/rpgs/harder-they-fall/

A tabletop RPG about a goose, and the townsfolk it terrorizes.

A fun story game where people tell tales about how they were tormented by a goose. I played this when a session of an RPG ended early. A definite mainstay in my RPG 'go bag' for any such occasion. My review is found here: http://www.whodaresrolls.com/rpgs/the-goose-of-grillner-grove/
