So for anyone who still hasn't heard about this yet https://itch.io/updates/update-on-nsfw-content
Itch.io is facing the same issues that Steam recently did, due to the prudish and outdated policies of payment processors who hold entirely too much power getting to decide what people do, or do not, get to experience, even in completely fictional, harmless fantasy context that has no bearing on real life people or events.
To put it mildly, I'm not pleased to see this stance taken against the freedom of creative expression, and it does more harm than good, because if you take away people's outlets in fiction and fantasy, then guess what? All they have left is reality to satisfy their urges/needs and that's got a lot more potential to be dangerous or harmful... but even though I don't agree with this censorship of expression and think it shouldn't be allowed, there's also very little I can realistically do to stop this either.
Since almost all my games feature content that Visa/Mastercard/Paypal and similar consider "problematic" for reasons I don't even want to try and understand, what I'm guessing will most likely happen is that the games will get de-listed from Itch.io permanently, unless the situation takes some kind of drastic turn for the better.
It's not Itch.io's fault just like it wasn't Steam's fault either, so try not to put the blame there. They really don't want to be doing this and it's really bad for their business of working with and supporting indie developers, but they have to keep payment processors happy or else they can't keep running their business. It's just a natural outcome of a dysfunctional system that has been allowed to grow into something close to a monopoly that payment processors now wield in terms of power being held by a few and controlling the actions of the many.
The one good thing to come out of this is that, at least with this big of a splash being made all at once, people are starting to take notice and take action. About 8 or 9 months ago something similar happened on Patreon that you all may remember when Paypal threw a stink about stuff and Patreon kicked almost all AB/DL content creators off their platform and plenty of others as well. But since that was a one-off isolated incident, most forgot about it and moved on, and not much was really done to change things since not enough people were affected by it for the world to care at large.
This time at least with having everything impact all at once like this, there's at least a chance people can see the absurdity of the situation and try to look at doing things in a new and better way, or at least the potential for that is there.
Without rambling on too much further, what this probably means for you is that even if you have purchased the games in the past, I thank you very much for your support over the years, but I don't think there will be much I can do to get you access to the content you've purchased anymore, and it may even mean a closure of my account entirely depending on how things shake out. (Not sure yet.)
I appreciate your understanding and if something does come along that makes sense in terms of providing a real solution or alternative (not just another company that uses Paypal/Stripe/etc. for payments because they are subject to the same issues Steam and Itch have faced, but I mean a real solution) then I'd love to hear about it if anyone knows, or if I happen to find out about it I will let you all know.
