How to turn off that stupid dumb Google AI Overview

This is a tutorial primarily written for my friends and family, so this is gonna be pretty short and informal. I'm gonna say some stuff that may sound obvious to the more tech-savvy among us, but this tutorial wouldn't be much good if my mum couldn't follow it.

Oh and uhm, if you use Firefox then this tutorial might not work for you.

There's gonna be 2 solutions:

  1. Switch Search Engine : you don't have to use Google to search stuff.
  2. Install a Plugin : use Google but without the AI Overview.

I recommend doing both solutions. Now more than ever it is the right time to switch search engines. But even so, if you "have" to use google sometime, you'll still have the AI Overview gone. Let's dive in.

Switch Search Engines

We all loved Google back before they turned evil somewhere between 2000 and 2010. While they're still in my opinion the best search engine, they are not the only one anymore. You can use other search engines to search stuff!

  1. Go to this link:  chrome://settings/search
    1. If you are not using Chrome, then change the first word to the name of your browser. I use brave, so for me the link is  brave://settings/search
  2. Click the big buttons that say "Change". Now you can pick a different search engine.
  3. The ones I really recommend are Brave & Startpage. These are particularly good because they don't collect any of your data while you're browsing the webs.
    1. Brave also has an annoying AI Overview. But luckily, you can turn it off. When you search something, click the gear icon in the top right then turn off "Answer with AI" and you're golden.
    2. Ecosia is another good option as their profits go towards planting trees and making the planet a greener place! Do note however that if you have an ad blocker, Ecosia doesn't make any money from your searches, effectively nullifying the effect.

Install a Plugin

If you still wanna use Google, then go to this link and click the big blue "Add to Chrome" button in the top right. This solution is much easier, but it unfortunately doesn't stop Google collecting your data.

Whilst this method is easier, it doesn't stop the Google AI from running, it just hides it. This is frustrating because these AI's eat up tons of energy that needs to be generated from, most likely, fossil fuels. How the world got like this is not within the scope of this tutorial, but it's a damned shame all the same.

Alright, have a good one!
