Jumping In and Getting Up to Speed

Author: Corey Bell Wright

I joined the project a bit later than the rest of my team due to some outside obligations and had to quickly catch up on the work that had already been done. The main challenge was figuring out where the team currently stood in development while also adjusting to a new version control system. I wanted to identify how I could contribute quickly and meaningfully, without slowing down the progress they’d already made.

To get up to speed, I reviewed the codebase and checked in with the team to see what the next critical system was that needed to be created. Once I was familiar with the current structure, I jumped in by starting work on the weapon/combat system — focusing on implementing a melee weapon system first. I’m still a bit behind, but I plan to catch up fully and help put both myself and the team in a better position to tackle our next milestone.
