Dev Blog: When Bugs Become Features!

Greetings Space Defenders!

Game development is always full of surprises and today, I’ve stumbled upon a particularly explosive one while fine-tuning the turret system in the Starborne Whispers mini-game.

The "Burst-Fire" Bug

While testing the turret mechanics, I noticed something peculiar: whenever the turret faces the main menu buttons but loses line of sight (using raycasting), it suddenly decides to unleash a wild burst of ammo!

Now, while it might sound (and look) hilarious - cause it truly does - it got me thinking: Why fix what could be fun?

From Bug to Power-Up

Rather than squash the bug completely, I’m considering turning it into an actual power-up for the game. The idea?

  • Players could trigger a "Burst Mode" power-up during gameplay, allowing the turret to temporarily go into overdrive and unleash a stream of high-powered ammo!
  • This would come at a cost, perhaps draining energy or limiting turret movement speed during the frenzy, adding a strategic layer to its use.

Check out the video I’ve attached showcasing the bug in action—I’m sure you’ll see why it sparked the idea!

As always, please share your thoughts with me. Do you think this bug-turned-power-up should be included in the game? Or do you think of additional ways it might function?

Thank you for taking the ime either way to  read this post!
