A good time to remember Itch.io sandbox mode

Due to recent events, security of Desktop games came to scrutiny. So, I would like to remind everyone, devs and players, the importance of sandbox mode. The mode currently is in experimental stage on the Itch.io app https://itch.io/docs/itch/using/sandbox.html .

The article explains it better than I ever could, but in a nutshell, it offers an extra protection when running games. Good if you want to try a game of an author you're not familiar with. A common occurrence in game jams.

However, this feature may not been used out of the box. In my test in Linux, I had to enable it (which is understandable, since again, it's on experimental stage). Moreover, not all games on the website are supported by the app.

To make it available for the application, your game has to be in a specific structure to be recognized by the platform. But better than uploading manually, is to use Itch's helper Butler, https://itch.io/docs/butler/ . It also has the benefit of supporting your game updates.

If you downloaded the itch.io desktop app,  butler is already installed! It can be found in the program directory. The app under the hood uses butler, and works just as fine as if was downloaded separately

Having butler, the process is pretty easy. Just login with it, give the directory, game name and platform, and the helper does the upload for you. I know command line scares some, but don't be.

A good security is important for a good environment for everyone, and we should be pro-active. More safe of mind to devs, more players willing to try exciting new games. Happy safe dev & gaming!
