How was this done?  Extensive research was conducted to ensure that we were able to map humanoid monsters to animals.   As there are numerous humanoid monsters that can appear as mice or rats the following pattern will be used in the text to make it clear which one is being referred to.

Mouse: Human-based mouse.
Mouse (as elf): A mouse with elfish features. Dwarves, elves, gnomes, halflings, half-elves, and half-orcs are based on mice. A mouse (as dwarf) will be shorter, stockier, and have dwarfish features compared to a normal mouse.

Rat (as hobgoblin): A hobgoblin based on a rat. Goblins, hobgoblins, kobolds, and orcs are based on rats, and will have the size and characteristics of their monster equivalent as appropriate.  A rat (as kobold) would be a small rat with kobold facial features compared to a normal rat.

Vole (as troglodyte): A troglodyte based on a vole. Gnolls, lizardman, and troglodytes and are based on voles, and will have the size and characteristics of their monster equivalent as appropriate.  A vole (as troglodyte) would be a vole with troglodyte features.
