'Pippin to Picnics!' Devlog #3 | Devtober

Hi there! I did quite a bit today on the game and I'm excited to show you!

What I did

First, I made the menu screen. I also made the game file in GameMaker before I did, so I could get the correct amount of pixels. I put it in the game and it looks quite nice. I also made sprites and objects for all the cats, which I added on to the menu screen in GameMaker.

The Game's Style

Instead of a play button, you press the space bar to enter the first level. I want to make this a sort of older style game with the graphics and life system. The UI is going to be a bar at the bottom showing you how many lives and points, coins you have.

The Game's Mechanics so far

Lives

You start with three lives, and can get a life by getting 10 coins and getting a certain amount of points. You lose a life if you run into a cat (picnic basket is going to get ruined if you run into someone. Especially since picnic baskets made by cats probably won't be that sturdy). If you lose all your lives, you have to restart the whole game.

Coins

By collecting 10 coins, you get a life. There are going to be 5 coins spread out through a whole level, so every 2 levels, you can get a life. Coins also give you points.

Points

You can get points by collecting coins, completing the level, and time (how long it took you to complete the level. Less time = more points).

1 coin = 100 points

Level complete = 500 points

7min <= time < 10min = 50 points

5min <= time < 7min = 100 points

3min <= time < 5min = 150 points

2min <= time < 3min = 200 points

time < 1min = 300 points

Plan for tomorrow

I want to make the coin sprite and get started on the first level. Which means I'll need to make a tiles with the tiles I have. I'll lay out the level after I make the tileset and get Pippin's controls working. I don't want to plan to do too much, cause y'know, overachieving. If I do all that and have some time in the day left, and feel like it, I'll probably do some more (but don't count on it :P).

If you have any feedback, I'd love to hear it! Thanks for reading and have a good day (or night)!
