Apex Legends is a battle royale game that is widely popular among FPS gamers. While it is basic mechanics imitate every other battle royale game, its combat system makes it stand out for those who really want a challenge.
Battle Royale games comprise players, whether in teams or solo, who drop onto a map, loot, and fight other opponents to claim victory. In the case of Apex Legends, the game is simple to grasp but difficult to master. This plays into the principle of game design "Easy to learn, hard to master" creating a fun gameplay experience for beginners and veterans alike.
Unlike most other popular Battle Royales, Apex Legends offers various playable characters with different playstyles for everyone to explore and enjoy(See Below).
This is quite unique as it also introduces team synergy into the gameplay not just how good the individual players are, although that does make a difference. This is a great feature that incentivizes teamwork more than the average Battle Royale experience. The general play style of each class is as follows:
Assault: This class is often aggressive creating space for the team as well as smoking other teams out of their hiding spot.
Skirmisher: This class comprises legends that give players the mobility to get in and out of fights making it a perfect class for those who want to catch enemies off-guard and pick them off.
Recon: This class as its title suggests, provides the team with valuable insights on where enemies are among other things.
Support: This class as its title suggests, supports the team whether it be loot, shield, health, or creating a diversion. This is a great class for those who like helping the team beyond just shooting.
Controller: This class specializes in locking down areas creating a favorable fighting ground for the team.
That being said, there are a lot of different playstyles making the game more diversion for all gamers.
Onto the gameplay mechanics, it is similar to any other Battle Royale game, players pick a location that they want to go to, go there, loot, and then fight other opponents. However, the game is not as simple as just aim and shoot, as the movement mechanic in the game gives it great depth. The movement system in Apex goes beyond the normal movement system as it also incorporates velocity giving the player more speed manipulation.
Above is a diagram explaining the movement system in Apex Legends that gives the player something to master. At the very basic, there is WASD movement that players can occasionally hit crouch to slide while running to give them faster speed. Taking advantage of this velocity gain mechanic spawns a whole bunch of other complex movements that I cannot explain well enough. While the game is fine as without learning the complicated movement system, being able to outmaneuver an opponent while shooting them gives the player a huge advantage.
That being said, I believe that Apex Legends is quite unique for its movement mechanic that separates it from other Battle Royale games.
