Game: ARK Survival Evolved 

  • What are the outcomes?
    In this game you can craft survival items like campfire, armor, weapons, and structure. As you level up you can craft more advances things like boats. 
  • What are the resources?
    The resources are elements you find in the wild like wood stone and metal, also animal and dinosaur parts. 
  • What are the recipes?
    The recipes are engrams that you earn from leveling up.
  • Does the crafting take time?
    yes the crafting takes a few minutes but you can play while you are crafting you just move slower.
  • Where does the crafting take place?
    The crafting takes place in the inventory and there are also different specialized crafting stations. 
  • What is the player experience?
    The players need to use their resources smartly to make the optimal tools for survival. 
  • Why do you think the design ended up in this way? Why were these particular elements selected for this crafting system?
    I think this is similar to other games like Minecraft in term of the materials type and gathering. The difference is that in this game you can craft way more items and they are more complex recipes so they chose to make the recipes visible engrams that you earn as you level up so that the players can see what they can make and they do not have to remember anything. Also I think they let you unlock the engrams in increasing order of complexity because they want you to have the experience of starting from starch housing and evolving into a castle with armor and weapons.

    • crafting guns has a big advantage over wooden weapons.

    • There are many items to craft, but not much room for customization.

    • From starch to armored metal and guns there is much to progress with crafting
