So I recently discovered that the Pirate Software GameJam - 15 was in progress, but there were only 3 days left to submit in this 2 week long jam. I took part regardless, hoping to create a working prototype if I put in 1 or 2 all-nighters. And I did! The game was finished and playable 15 minutes before the submission window shut down. But my Game Design Document was still pending. While rushing through it I lost track of time and only noticed the clock when time was supposed to be up. I quickly saved whatever I had written and switched to the Jam's submission window where just 23 seconds were left.
I quickly filled in the fields and hit submit....
And then it displayed on my screen
I froze.
All that effort and excitement gone to waste because I took too long writing my GDD.
Acceptance came in quicker than I thought, and it was then I was just disappointed. I felt stupid for not submitting my game a minute or two prior, thinking I could've just left the GDD incomplete, or added it afterwards; not sure if it was even possible or not.
And honestly, I still don't know. It's not clear to me whether or not you can make changes to your game's page after submitting for a GameJam without the risk of disqualification.
Well,
what happened happened....
I'm suprised to see the game I managed to make in the span of just 3 days, a younger me could've only dreamed of such an accomplishment.
Play it, review it, and give me feedback- good and bad.
Takeaway: Don't get overconfident when you're in a good position, that's what I've learnt. The only reason I committed myself to that document is because I completed my game before the deadline, which I had not expected I would be able to do. That's what got me, my own stupid ego. Don't let yours get you.
Cheers!
