Minecraft's Progression

I think enough has been written about Minecraft that I do not have to refer to it by name for most of you to know what video game I'm talking about.  I could simply describe it as a game that focuses mainly on collecting materials and building structures, with players breaking pieces of the world to begin making anything; with this description, I'm sure 99 percent of gamers would be able to successfully discern this game as Minecraft.  However, some people view Minecraft as purely a sandbox game, with no real progression at all.  This however is simply not the case.

In Minecraft, the crafting Mechanic is one of constant progression.  By its very nature, every new thing you craft using this mechanic will be an improvement or progression on your previous experience in the game.  Every tool and weapon can be upgraded using different materials to craft it.  Each weapon made of a stronger material is an improvement Statistically, doing more damage, mining better, or something along those lines.

At different points in Minecraft, the Meta is different with new items you acquire or find, the most efficient way to play the game changes.  Mastery of fighting enemy mobs, building, and crafting speed is gained by the player the more they progress through the game and the more they play.  Minecraft also has a Narrative progression, as the Nether and the End form part of the story as the player must go to one and then the other in order.  Once you've progressed to the end of the game, the full narrative of the game is given to the player.

Another way of looking at the progression in Minecraft would be through the manner of loops and arcs.   The smallest loop would be breaking blocks, as all you do is hold down the mine button and wait for the block to break, then you pick up the block and repeat if you wish.  The largest loop would be enchanting, as you can continue to enchant even after you reach the "ending" of the game.  In fact, you can only get and enchant certain items after beating the game.  The ludonarrative arc of the game for most players, at least for sure myself, is "What is the best thing I can build now"; or more accurately, "How can I make this build/my world look better and be more efficient?".  Some of the smaller sequences are trying to survive the night, finding food, and trading with villagers.

Minecraft Farm

Farming is also a main loop in Minecraft. Players must find seeds for different crops, grow them, feed them to animals to breed, and repeat the process.

Minecraft is a constant arc-loop sandwich.  Do you want to build something? Oh well, you have to go over here and do this to be able to get it.  But first, you have to get this weapon, and to do that you need a stronger pickaxe, which you can trade up to with villagers, but you need emeralds, but you need sticks, and crops to trade for emeralds, but you need tools to mine these sticks and crops, but you need to mine base wood and stone for these tools.
