Today I'd like to showcase the other side of my work as the level designer for Shades Summit which is Prop Building! The assets shown above are some of the many different props you'll see in our game to add to the visual storytelling of each level. At the current moment, we are still deciding whether to implement the ability to destroy these objects via projectile or shockwave to give the player more freedom of choice and enjoyment. However, due to lack of time, they will be the simple backdrop for the player to navigate around.
The next set of props I created was the Debri Walls and the humble torch for lighting the levels up. The Debri Walls will be another obstacle that the player will have to use shockwave to get through. As of right now, we are working hard to create a cool explosion effect when the player destroys each wall with a shockwave. I'm looking forward to seeing how it will work in the end and I'm glad that our programmers were able to implement this mechanic super easily too.
Currently, this is what our props look like in Level 2 and I enjoyed trying to figure out how to lay them all out around each room. I tried my best to make it seem like the props around the mines were telling a story of the miners who used to work in this level and how they were shipping their loads from one section to another. As well as this, I wanted to try and create barricades using these props for the player to be able to avoid getting shot by the enemies. I figured that the player would need some defenses rather than just sitting around an open room avoiding the enemy fire.
In the end, I wanted to make something really neat and pleasing to the viewers of these levels and hope that everyone who tries our game will enjoy it just a bit more with what I've created!
