Bridge Chair for Spaceship - Modeling Log

Hey, I'm Jacob,

This is a chair model that I made for the WakeTech  SGD capstone project. I derived a lot of inspiration from games like Portal and Subnautica when developing the general shape and language of the model. I focused on clean lines, and simple shapes to minimize visual noise and communicate a cohesive design language. It features three linear actuators that can gimbal the chair up to 20 degrees from center in any direction which is helpful for rough take offs and landings and deep cushions for maximum comfort.

I focused on clean topology and minimal waste throughout the mesh, I tried my best to keep the polycount under control despite having some intricate details, particularly around the actuators. There are a total of ten nested LEDs integrated in the design, four on the base and six on the chair itself, I chose to make these physically integrated into the mesh instead of using normal maps.  I kept the design as original as possible while retaining the language I wanted to use. I tried not to look at one reference for too long as to not generate a design bias.

Developing the cushion matrix was very fun, I used a character reference to sculpt the form to match the curves of the human body. Having a comfortable chair to sit in on long journeys in space is a must. My group and I settled on a clean monochrome color pallet for the ship, with lots of glossy whites and muted colors, with hints of bright colors in areas like the three point harness on the chair. This choice was heavily inspired by Subnautica. I added a subtle hint of bronze in the actuator hinges and carbon fiber for extra depth.

Thank you for checking out my chair design! - JC
