Guide to Itch.io

Itch.io is a website where indie game developers post their game projects for anyone to play. It's similar to steam but less professional and more used to show off projects instead of selling fully completed games. It is very easy to start posting projects by making a new page.

1. After signing into a google or other type of account. The first step in posting something on itch.io is to go to your DASHBOARD and click on "Create new project." which will bring you to a page that looks like this:

2A. These next steps are very intuitive. You type in the project name, write the description, you click on every drop down and select the one that applies to the project that you are currently trying to upload. Assuming that you have a project ready to upload, take a few screenshots and add the screenshots to the page by clicking the button. Same with the cover image make a cover image that has similar dimensions to what is said on screen using another program and upload the cover image to the page. It is also possible to make the cover image a gif. (It's important to note that extra setup is needed to allow for payments, but for this guide I will assume your project is free).

2B. Some things to keep in mind while making your project name is to find a name that says a lot about your game as possible in 1-2 words. It should also be a name that catches someone's attention. Same with the tagline, but you will have more freedom with the amount of words. This is an example of what your tagline will look like in the list of games (look at the part that says "Move to Shoot")

For the description, there is a lot of freedom that can add to it. Images and videos are allowed to be imported and shown in the description and do a lot to make the page look more professional.

3. The most important part to your page is most likely going to be to upload the project. Itch.io makes it easy just by clicking the upload button and selecting the file that you want to upload. Usually a game project from a game engine is multiple files inside a folder, in this case you should wrap all the files inside a zip folder and upload that. The website does have an upload limit of 1 GB, but it is possible to upload bigger files by contacting the itch.io team. If you have a project that is able to be played in a browser, then you can select that option when the file is uploaded.

4. If you want the project to be accessible to the public, you need to click save and view page before you are able to convert the page to a public page. When you click on save and view page, something like this will show up:

This is an example of one of my projects. The page is very basic because I wanted to show a very simple example.

5. To decorate the page, click on EDIT THEME at the top of the screen. A tab on the side should show up like this

Every color can be adjusted. All changes responsively show up on screen as you change it. The font can be changed to a limited selection of fonts but it is also possible to use any font from google fonts. An image can be uploaded to replace the background color with an image. The background also has many options in how you can display it. Here's an example of that in one of my pages:

There are also more options that can help change the alpha value of backgrounds and changing specific text like the header.

Everything else is up to you. Here are some sources to my projects that can be looked at for inspiration:
