Just a brief update today to share with you some of the art and graphics of Warriors & Writings. But first, I just want to say thank you so much to everyone who has already backed W&W: Fury of the Wild on Kickstarter. Thanks to you, the campaign is now 50% funded with plenty of time left to reach 100% and beyond.
Now, on to the subject of art and graphics. The first piece of graphic design I had done for Warriors & Writings was the logo.
This was done by Thatcher Cohen of Dark Doll Games. I love the overall balance of the design and his clever combination of sword and pencil to emphasize that the game is both a fantasy dungeon crawler and a roll & write. Thatcher is an excellent artist, and his skill is on full display in his own game, Witchbound. It's a very different sort of game from W&W, but if you like fantasy adventures you might want to check it out. It was crowdfunded last year on Gamefound, but it is still open to late backers HERE.
The artwork I am most excited about is the cover illustrations for Set 1 and Set 2. Both of these were done by the talented s0ulafein (Deviant Art page, Twitter, DriveThruRPG page). Here they are without the titles and trade dress that surrounds them on the final covers.
It has been a real pleasure commissioning artwork from a professional artist, and seeing them bring my vision to life. Watching each image go from my initial description to early sketch to finished artwork is just so satisfying.
In addition to commissioned artwork, I've also made use of some stock fantasy art on the interior pages of the rulebooks for both core sets of W&W, as well as on the cover of Encounter 1: The Labyrinth. For this, I've turned to the work of Dean Spencer (Linktree), who had nicely stylized black and white line art that was just perfect for my needs.
Finally, lets talk about the maps. If you've already picked up W&W Set 1, or the Introductory Edition, you've seen that the maps are very barebones. I created these myself using Microsoft Word and some free resources from Game-Icons.net. While working on Fury of the Wild, I decided to improve the maps using another online resource called DungeonScrawl. The result is a product that looks much more thematic and professional, while still maintaining the clarity crucial to a smooth gameplay experience. I'm happy to say that, not only will the new maps in Set 2 and Encounter 1 be improved this way, but I will soon be updating Set 1 and the Introductory Edition with these better-looking maps.
Well, that's all for today. Thank you again so much for your support on this project! I can't wait to share the finished product with you. If you have any questions about the game, feel free to post them in the comments to this update, or in the main comments on the campaign. I'm always happy to chat.
