Cakewalk was no Stroll in the Park
It was a tricky setup and sandbox situation when I first attempted development in the free digital audio workstation (DAWS) called CakeWalk.
The interface was quite overwhelming. Too many plug-ins for the system to just add a basic synthesizer or additional synthesizers. I was hoping to develop a synthetic sound from the 80's or a cyberpunk style genre within minutes. This did not occur. However, when I did get to create a decent tone which resembled a Rhodes electric organ. Yet, it was mediocre at best. The is an option of adding clips that yield electric piano tones and repeating notes. Unfortunately, I could not figure out the steps to add notes into the system by myself.
As shown below in the red bars area it depicts a looped clip which creates some style of cadence. The sound is ominous but has its deep repeating tone which reminds of a simpler time of gaming. Heavier beat means heavy business when it comes to 'Boss' battle situations. Whether I will keep it for a later level which includes a 'boss' engagement is still to be determined.
The team did not agree upon a 'boss' engagement situation. However, it could be an option depending on the character progression or narrative beats which may be flexible.
After switching back to FL Studio Mobile I was overall happier. The system, even though not as easy as a desktop audio workstation was still more intuitive. Typically, DAWS are easier due to mouse and keyboard interface. However, within 5-10 minutes in FL Studio Mobile I was able to get a general tone and melody. I immediately achieved the 80's and cyberpunk genre feel without any real issues. I will have to do more research within FL Studio Mobile videos as well as 80's arcade games that had an influential musical score to player movement. I may lean into classic beat 'em up arcade games to get the specific cadence and flow I am looking for.
