Bubble Frog

Hello lovely peeps!

It's been a hot minute since I wrapped up production on Chumble Bumbles, so now what?

Welp, I wanted to make something a little more unique, not just another platformer. I enjoyed watching people try to get the best score in Chumbles Bumbles so I wanted to recapture that, and I had doodled a frog trapped inside and bubble while brain storming, and thus...

BUBBLE FROG WAS BORN! I slapped some Japanese on there poorly translated by Google Translate because I'm in my 30s and thus from a generation who think everything is cooler with Japanese text on it, don't judge me.

I wasn't sure about the engine I wanted to use so explored a few including Pixel Game Maker MV and Godot. The former would have worked but lacked a web player to embed the game into an itch page and the latter, welp I can confirm after hours and hours of tutorials that I'm no coder (yes I'm a slave to Visual Scripting). So I went back to my beloved; GB Studio.

I don't want to launch a page for the game just yet as I'd like to have something people can actually play when it pops up on the 'new games' section of itch, so I'll probably just post blog posts into the void until then.

So what do I have so far?

  • I've gotten player movement feeling good with big help from Piranha Fang's amazing Flappy Bird clone as reference.
  • I've setup basic scripts for player death, points collected, and level checkpoints (yes I learnt my lesson from v1 of Chumbles Bumbles to include checkpoints so players don't hunt down and hit me)
  • Created basic assets for the title screen (seen above), Bubble Frogs sprite, the Onigiri Bubble Sprite, and Level Tiles including blocks and spike hazards.

So what's next?

So next I wanna finally learn to do tile-swapping in GB Studio, this will be super handy for giving the visuals of the game a little more life. This doesn't exactly seem as simple as past stuff I've committed to learning though so this may be a slower process. In the mean time I'll continue to work on assets (of course all will go into the GB Studio Background Bits and GB Studio Sprites packs I offer so anyone else can play around with them too!) ready for building levels :)

Anywho, I think that wraps it up for now!

Thanks for reading!

-Timbo
