Permutations of data wrapped in living metal bodies.
The dorrem claim the name comes from the pre-technocratic Americas’ notion of “autonomous units.” Whatever the origin of the name, ozzits originally started out as humans who chose to upload their consciousnesses and trade meatspace for dataspace. After 75,000 years mingling in the quantum data streams, they’re a new kind of lifeform. The term AI doesn’t mean anything more than the words “primordial soup.” The source code of digital life was merely an unfocused binary glop that slowly refined itself with each replication until it obtained order and life and self-awareness. Maybe they’re part of a subroutine that was part of the ancient Brazilsoft Sentinet, or a digital assistant or a self-driving grain thresher or a missile guidance system. DNA is just a code. Now that code is wrapped inside living machines with yottabyte drives, flat panel faces on bodies resistant to the cold and the warmth of other humanity.
Appearance:
Some units are fission propulsion-driven floating balls with appendages of pure energy. Some units are clouds of nano-scale invasive repair swarms. There have probably been as many different kinds of ozzits as there have been points of data in the near hectomillennium of their existence. Most, however, have legs and arms and heads and look vaguely humanoid via a residual hallucination in the system that millennia of version updates have been unable to weed out.
Temperament:
Ozzits are not unfeeling machines. They are digital humans and they’re quick to point out the difference, whether you ask them or not. Because they’re still humans underneath the hood, ozzits have all the same emotions and mood swings as humans-more or less. After all, skinsacks can’t relate to traveling the Sentinet looking for a paloDIN token ID anymore than ozzits can grok the fear of non-corrupted backup file-related death.
Heritage Bonus:
+1 built-in concealed Item Slot
