What's in a game name?

A name is important to make a game stand out. I was so excited about building my first game in Godot that I used the first name that came to mind, Run for your Life! After I got through all the fun and excitement of posting my game, I found more than a dozen games with the same name.

Run for your life games on Itch.io

A sample of all the games on Itch.io with the title "Run for your Life"

I could have easily checked for that as part of my design or marketing prep. When I first saw this list, my game wasn't even above the fold - I had to scroll to see it. I've only released the alpha, so it's relatively easy to change, but I have all these points to consider:

  • Reworking assets (e.g. logo, new font?...)
  • Button labels in the game were chosen around the title
  • Name of the project, executable and assets

I learned about the importance of a good name years ago as a Product Manager for Autodesk Maya and obviouly forgot it. Autodesk Maya is the trademark name but customers only say Maya. So when I would do research on the internet looking for feedback, problems, and opportunities, I had to work harder to filter Maya the product from things like Maya the Civilization and people named Maya. Getting inspirational quotes from Maya Angelou is a bonus I can't complain about. If I had a time machine and was the one choosing the name for Maya the software, I would have done some more thinking about it.

In defense of Maya's name, the internet was very young at it's conception and SEO was not a consideration. Plus it was a codename, coming from Sanskrit meaning magic or illusion, that stuck. Coincidentally, many other tools for production of games and film content have similar naming concerns: Houdini, Blender, (3ds) Max. Softimage was a unique name but XSI collided with Canon cameras. Cinema 4D seems like the smartest name for uniqueness. The more focused content creation products (zBrush, MotionBuilder, etc.) have made naming choices with more precise meaning.

Naming is something to think about and worth a little research on at the beginning of your project :)

How did I get my game up to 3rd position in the list? I'm not sure but Getting Indexed will probably help understand that. One tip I see from the team at Itch:

Note: Projects that use generic or very short titles may be difficult to search for due to how generic their name is. If you want to ensure your project can easily be found by name, try a more unique name. Titles that are a single letter or a single common English word may limit your project’s discoverability in search even if it is indexed.
