Imagine the thrill of swapping the structured logic of software engineering for the boundless creativity of game development. That’s the exhilarating journey I’ve embarked upon. Join me as I embark on the realm of game design.
I’m a 35-year-old software engineer with a deep passion for front-end development, and mobile apps, and a knack for working with data and APIs. My professional life has been dedicated to crafting user-friendly interfaces, but the world of game development has always intrigued me. In this post, I’m excited to share the start of this journey, aiming to inspire those who might be contemplating a similar path - and also committing myself to that.
Ever since I powered on my GameBoy to play Pokémon Red, video games have captivated me. I grew up immersed in the narratives and worlds of games like Settlers, Lineage II, and World of Warcraft. These games, especially RPGs and MMOs, were not just pastimes; they were windows into rich, interactive worlds that fueled my imagination.
Inspired by videos from other game developers, I embark on a journey into the world of game creation. The fusion of art and technology in games captivated me. Although I am not that proficient in making art, I am learning pixel art!
As for game engines, Unity and Unreal Engine were my initial playgrounds, but I soon found my rhythm with Construct 3, which matched my skills perfectly. This exploration has been a mix of online learning and hands-on experimentation with small projects, each step a learning curve.
While a career shift to game development isn’t in my immediate plans, embracing it as a hobby has been incredibly fulfilling. My web development career has been rewarding, but game development has opened up a new avenue for creativity and experimentation. It’s a testament that it’s never too late to pursue new interests.
I’m now preparing for my first game jam, “Finally Finish Something.” Its premise is simple yet powerful: just complete a project. Facing the challenge of game design, I am looking forward to it. Although I haven’t come up with a good idea for it yet.
This year, I aim to develop and release a game on either Steam or the Play Store, marking a new milestone in my journey.
Documenting this adventure is not just about sharing my progress; it’s about growing, learning, and perhaps inspiring others to explore game development. I’m looking forward to sharing more updates as I delve deeper into game development.
Join me on this blog, share your own stories or advice, and let’s explore the exciting world of game creation together!
