2023 Reflections

2023 was quite a year! Before getting into the thick of 2024, I wanted to look back on the past year and say a big THANK YOU to everyone who has supported Fablefly Music's journey so far.

Fablefly Music began its life in April 2023, becoming the sister studio to my indie games studio, Almanak Games.

You can read the 2023 Reflections for Almanak Games here.

ORIGIN STORY:

Having grown up with games like Final Fantasy, I’ve been enamored of video game music all my life. (Nobuo Uematsu is a legend - nobody can say otherwise!)

Once upon a time, I made piano covers of some of my favourite game songs and posted them on YouTube.

So I was very excited to discover a notation program called MuseScore, which made it even easier to transcribe music for my covers. My first transcription was “She's Playing Piano” from Undertale.

I didn’t try my hand at composing with MuseScore until I became writer/composer on an indie game project about DRAGONS, being developed by Adelaide studio Krion Games. Unfortunately the project was shelved - all of us got busy as we transitioned from university into our adult lives.

But it was too late - I’d already caught the composing and game dev bug! After a couple of game jams, I thought to myself, “Why don’t I share my music for others to use?" It would be fun and rewarding - not to mention an excellent opportunity to expand my skills.

A few days and one cobbled-together itch.io page later, Fablefly Music took flight!

THE HIGHLIGHTS:

#1. Participated in my first music jam!

#2. Had a song featured on the Game Dev Field Guide podcast!

#3. Contributed to Editarrr!

#1. Participated in my first music jam!

OST Composing Jam #6 was the biggest jam I’ve entered, and it was an amazing but exhausting experience! Silly me stumbled across the jam AFTER it had already begun, but decided to give it a go anyway.

Pushing myself to the limits, I composed 1 song per day, ending up with a 6-song soundtrack for an imaginary Cinderella-inspired game concept: “Cinder ‘Til Midnight”

It ranked 27th out of a whopping 157 entries! Excitingly, two of my tracks - "Our Story Begins" and "Marionette Madness" - made it into the jam’s “Tick Tock…” album.

You can listen to the album here or purchase a copy here.

#2. Had a song featured on the Game Dev Field Guide podcast!

Some of you may know that the Game Dev Field Guide podcast is my number one, go-to game dev podcast, so I was floored when its host, Zackavelli, asked permission to use my Christmas track, “IT'S SNOWTIME” in his December episode!

Thank you Zackavelli for the opportunity, and for your kind donation to Fablefly Music!

I would highly, HIGHLY recommend the podcast to anyone wanting to learn more about game dev.

#3. Contributed to Editarrr!

"Editarrr" - a brilliant, pirate-themed Mario Maker-like level editor - was released on Steam in late 2023, and I was absolutely honoured to have my track, “IT’S SNOWTIME”, included in the game’s seasonal event!

CONGRATULATIONS to the Game Dev Field Guide team on launching such a charming and well-crafted game!

Most viewed music track: A WELCOME HAUNTING

Most downloaded: SWEET SERENE

Most purchased: FANCY SEEING YOU HERE

I was surprised by how popular "A WELCOME HAUNTING" was, since it is a very short track. Apparently, playful Halloween-y vibes are more sought after than I thought! It was originally written for my game, "Bucket List of a Ghost", as its menu theme.

"SWEET SERENE" was also an unexpected hit - I'd written it in a mad rush for my game jam entry, a Greek mythology dating sim, "LOVE BLOOMS: Speed Dating with Persephone". I was quite happy with how it turned out, so am very glad others enjoyed it too!

I've learnt a lot during the year, and forced myself to go beyond my comfort zone, which wouldn't have happened if Fablefly Music didn't exist. Truly grateful for all the encouraging words and advice received along the way. I still have a long road of improvement ahead of me, but this has been a solid start!

Well, that’s it for 2023 reflections! Thank you again for supporting Fablefly Music, and hope 2024 brings wonderful things for you all!
