Someone on fedi asked about tabletop roleplaying games played this year, and we got a little enthusiastic about the question and want to share it beyond just replying. So, have a listicle!
Played:
- This Town Is Full of Monsters, a storytelling game of eldritch horror in a small town with a focus on developing characters, groups, locations, and mysteries. This was long-running game, July ’22 to April ’23. Really fun time, everything we hoped for from it.
- Ech0, a small game about children trying to reunite the ghost of a mech pilot with their fallen mech. Really really fun until it became really really heartbreaking. A+, would cry again.
- I Have the High Ground, a storytelling game about the prologue to an epic duel, told using rock-paper-scissors. We’ve played a lot of this game and we continue to love it.
- Thirsty Sword Lesbians, an action romp about emotional disasters with swords. Our group is all still learning it but it’s fun, like, leaning into the downbeats.
- A playtest for one of our games. Also went really well!
Didn’t play:
- Wanderhome, a narrative game about walking through a pastoral world. We played a little bit of this a while ago, but realized that it really needed to have a core plot to drive the token economy. Didn’t get a chance to try it with a plot.
- i’m sorry did you say street magic, an intensely collaborative city-describing game. Our favorite worldbuilding game, just didn’t get a chance yet this year.
