Hi there!
I've been absent for a while now, mostly due to real life happening. Since releasing Endurance for the fourth annual VimJam, I've moved to another state and have been dealing with all the responsibilities that that entails. Most of my free time has been spent getting a marketing certification and looking for employment that utilizes said marketing certification. (Did you know so many "entry-level" jobs require years of experience now that all the big job-hunting sites had to add an entirely new "No Experience Required" category!!?)
Anyway, things have settled down enough for me to think about my next (small) project. I've always had a deep fascination with Undertale fan games and alternate universes. I don't tend to participate in them, but I've often gotten lost in exploring diverging trails of fan-made Sans fights on YouTube, examining the shared aesthetic sensibilities between them and the unique digital ecosystems that they produce. If you start to look around, you can find threads connecting dozens of these videos, some of them being surrounded by entire worlds produced by just a few individuals.
Honestly, even though the entire thing is populated mostly by autistic teenagers ten years younger than me, it's strangely intimidating to break into. I just don't have the free time to fully envelop myself in fan projects for the things I care about anymore. But after watching this subset of the community from afar for years, I've finally decided to throw my own hat into the ring and make an Undertale fan game, featuring none other than JayEazy.
Even though he's become something of a joke online, I can't help but have a certain level of respect for JayEazy for taking it all in stride and using it to grow his career. Though to a lesser extent than with Undertale, I've also had a wonderful time watching new, creative content sprout out of JayEazy's bizarre (but effective) advertising techniques. Because the meme revolves around remixing or rewriting his TikToks, it's the first one in a while that actually facilitates creativity. Even if some of the edits are pretty simple, they're different enough to actually be jokes beyond "Look At This Thing That Everyone is Posting Again." It's fun to see a joke online that has some longevity built into it, and it means I feel comfortable putting in a decent amount of time adding to the joke myself.
The last piece of information I will leave you with for now is that, even though this game is obviously a punchline, I am putting in genuine effort towards making it fun and well-written. The funniest thing you can do with a game like this is to make it as good as possible. I'm not even using a pre-existing framework! Everything is hand-coded by me in GameMaker. This adds a a lot to my workload, but it lets me bypass the awkward coding of vanilla Undertale and fix problems with how that game runs. (i.e. the SOUL not adjusting its vertical and horizontal speed when moving diagonally).
I hope you're looking forward to it! More information will be revealed closer to release!
