Heyo!
No idea how this devlog posting stuff works on here but here we go!
This is going to be about my next and current project Outback Stabhouse. A lot of you who follow me on here will know that I make games inspired by ProtonJon and The Runaway Guys as a whole. If you don't know who they are, they are a group of wonderful content creators who do an annual charity stream, as well as their own gaming content on a semi-daily basis. This next game is based off of their podcast "Disc Only" Episode 5: "It's Talking Time!" Yes I know exactly what episode it was, I do too much research for this. Never said I wasn't passionate about my wonderfully, stupid ideas.
This game was originally supposed to come out this year but I hit many snags in development. I had designed the game to be a stealth game originally, however I was having too many issues designing such a system because I'm gonna be real honest with you, I can't do level design and stealth is an environment as a puzzle. I tried real hard to make it so because it would have been absolutely hilarious to create a comedy stealth game - of which there are only two to my knowledge: Octodad and Roombo. Alas, twas never meant to be. I had an issue with the Github repo for the project and I lost an entire level that had the most up-to-date code and I couldn't remember for the life of me what I was doing in that scene. Remember to always write down what you've done. Documentation is muy importante!
So I had to scrap that version of the project. After spending some time trying to figure out what to do with the project because I still wanted to make it, I went back to work on the art. I reviewed one of the designs I had created for our protagonist Jon and that's when it hit me.
Mr. Protonathan Jonathan ->
The design I had made for Jon never fit the genre of game I was creating... that's because this art is based off of the River City Girls art style.
A Side Scrolling, Beat-em Up.
Wait a minute, if I changed the game to be a side scrolling beat'em up game, that would essentially be easier to design because I already know how to design combat very well, I would eliminate a whole mess of work that I would had to do cutting production literally in half, and a lot of the story already planned wouldn't need to be changed! The damn game had designed itself and I didn't even notice!
It was perfect. Outback Stabhouse would go from a stealth game to now as a side scrolling beat'em up a la River City Girls and TMNT: Shredder's Revenge.
And that's where we start our adventure with Outback Stabhouse 2.0!
Hopefully I can keep up these blog posts as I create this game and/or create video dev logs on Youtube for it. I'm currently in pre-production for the game and a lot of research needs to be done for it before I can start development proper. Hopefully, I can get a team together to help make the game a lot faster for y'all to enjoy!
Otherwise, for now I will leave it at that. Know that development of Outback Stabhouse is happening and it will get made hopefully by the end of next year 2024. It isn't a long game by any stretch of the imagination but unlike my previous two projects, I want this one to be as polished as a high quality published indie game.
For now I shall bid y'all adieu. Until next time!
PS. If you want to help support the development of Outback Stabhouse and me as a creator, I've created a Ko-fi page! Any and all support helps so much so thank you in advance! Link below:
