History of Midnight Run

Hello everyone! I just wanted to take this time to talk about the overall development of my game 'Midnight Run'. My journey with making this game actually started long ago during my college days. Thanks to my love for food, I wanted to create a game that speaks to the late-night peeps that are up because they are:

1) Working that late shift and needing to get their grub on.

2) Gaming until the wee hours of the night only to realize, "OH MAN!!! I HAVE TO EAT!"

3) Studying for those classes that seem to have exams EVERY SINGLE DAY! (Just person experience here... ignore the rant.)

4) Food's good... must get. Time? What's that?

I'm sure there are more reasons, but these were just a few to start off. LOL!

When the idea for the game first came about, I was working with Game Maker 8 which is now called Game Maker Studio back in 2009. The original title was 'Blob Brother's Midnight Run' and that's as far as it got... The title. Around that time, I was learning my way with 3Ds Max and the Unreal Editor.

Original title before I decided not to continue.

A year later (2010), I went back to Game Maker 8 and scrapped the whole Blob Brother's part of the title because I totally thought it was too much of a tongue twister. So, I came up with the new title, 'Couch Potato's Midnight Run'.

This time, I had the menu with options (only start worked) and two levels. The game was a side scrolling action-adventure where you would jump on top of the lightbulb enemies and shoot doughnuts from an invisible doughnut gun while making your way through a store looking for snacks. Chocolate bars were the checkpoints, and an energy drink gave you invincibility.

Unfortunately, after a month of working on it, I decided to scrap the whole idea because it really wasn't how I wanted the game to go. Not to mention that there were already a ton of games out there doing similar things. I felt like my game would just bore people at that point.

In 2016, I was introduced to RPG Maker VX Ace, and the ideas started flooding my head, especially after seeing games like 'Mad Father', 'Ib', and 'The Witch's House'. I really like the overall style of the games and really loved the decision making the games made the player make. I also found it more relaxing to create a game in RPG Maker so the 'THAT'S IT, I'M DONE' thought never crossed my mind. However, I always found myself stuck at a certain point with the games I was making. I would go through the whole motion of creating the story, levels, some assets, music, and characters, but I end up midway the development process because I would talk myself out of completing them. As of right now, I have two fully flushed out games that need to be completed, but I couldn't finish it because my original idea popped back in my head as a mission I needed to finish.

Late 2021, I was trying to think of how I was going to bring back 'Couch Potato's Midnight Run' and get it going in RPG Maker. I tried bringing in the assets from Game Maker, but it just didn't look right. So, to clear my head, I just concentrated on the theme song, and then BAM!! It just hit me, and I simply called it 'Midnight Run'.

The next year I upgraded to RPG Maker MZ and that was it. I pushed on and kept with it until now... THE LAST TESTING STAGE!!!

I'm so excited about releasing this for everyone to play. I hope you all enjoy everything I put into it! Until then, HAVE A GREAT DAY!!
