Blog Post: 10-Week Development Challenge Kickoff!
Hello fellow developers and creators! I’m DryCreations (or just Dry), and I’m thrilled to announce my 10-week journey into the exciting realms of game development and generative art. 🚀
Motivation:
Rekindling the Creative Fire: After a hiatus, I’m diving back into the realms of game development and generative art. I have found myself missing the creative pursuits now that I am teaching high school. It’s not a new beginning but a rekindling of my passion for these creative pursuits. I’ve got some experience under my belt, and now it’s time to take it to the next level.
Goals and Challenges:
The Big Picture: Over the next 10 weeks, starting from October 8th, 2023 (Sunday), I’m embarking on a challenging but rewarding adventure. My goal is to build a strong foundation in both game development and generative art. I will be creating one game and one generative art project per week. Each game project will focus on specific game mechanics.
Week 1 (October 8th, 2023): Platforming Prototype
- Game:
- Building a 2D platforming prototype.
- Mechanics include player movement, jumping, and basic physics.
- Generative Art:
- Creating generative art with an emphasis on randomness and chaos.
Week 2 (October 15th, 2023): Puzzle Challenges
- Game:
- Crafting a puzzle-solving game with intricate mechanics.
- Focus on unique puzzle designs, level progression, and player interaction.
- Generative Art:
- Exploring generative art with a deep dive into fractal patterns.
Week 3 (October 22nd, 2023): Strategy and Tactics
- Game:
- Developing a turn-based strategy game.
- Explore mechanics like unit movement, combat, and decision-making.
- Design challenging AI opponents to test player strategy.
- Generative Art:
- Creating generative art with algorithmic techniques.
Week 4 (October 29th, 2023): Arcade Action
- Game:
- Creating an arcade-style action game with fast-paced gameplay.
- Mechanics include movement, shooting, enemy waves, scoring, and power-ups.
- Generative Art:
- Exploring generative art inspired by nature and organic patterns.
Week 5 (November 5th, 2023): Strategy Evolution
- Game:
- Evolving your strategy game from Week 3 with advanced features.
- Introduce unit abilities, resource management, and complex AI behaviors.
- Generative Art:
- Delving into abstract geometric patterns and interactive generative art.
Week 6 (November 12th, 2023): Exploratory Adventures
- Game:
- Building an exploration-based adventure game with intricate level design.
- Encourage player curiosity and interaction with the game world.
- Generative Art:
- Creating interactive art through coding and user-generated input.
Week 7 (November 19th, 2023): Maze Challenges
- Game:
- Crafting a maze-based game with complex mazes and dynamic obstacles.
- Implement advanced collision detection and dynamic level design.
- Generative Art:
- Combining various generative art techniques into intricate artworks.
Week 8 (November 26th, 2023): Classic Arcade Vibes
- Game:
- Creating a classic arcade-style game with physics-based mechanics.
- Develop gameplay around bouncing, rolling, or swinging mechanics.
- Generative Art:
- Building generative art based on user interaction and real-time feedback.
Week 9 (December 3rd, 2023): Unique Platformer
- Game:
- Expanding on your platformer from Week 1 with unique features.
- Add character abilities, environmental hazards, and complex level design.
- Generative Art:
- Exploring generative art with a focus on interactivity and dynamic visual effects.
Week 10 (December 10th, 2023): Journey into 3D Worlds
- Game:
- For the final week, embark on a journey into 3D game development.
- Create a 3D game that explores a unique mechanic or theme in the digital realm.
- Dive into 3D modeling, lighting, and rendering to bring your game to life.
- Generative Art:
- In the realm of generative art, venture into the world of 3D digital art.
- Use 3D modeling software to craft a generative 3D artwork that showcases your creative abilities in a new dimension.
Weekly Blog Post Template:
- Week Recap: Summarize your progress, challenges faced, and lessons learned during the week.
- Coding Insights: Share coding tips and techniques you discovered.
- Personal Reflections: Reflect on your experiences, insights, and any struggles you encountered.
- Educational Connections: Connect your journey to what you’re teaching in school and how it enhances your teaching skills.
This 10-week challenge is a path of growth and exploration in the world of code and art. Join me on this journey, and together, we’ll build the skills and knowledge to create amazing digital experiences!
Stay tuned for weekly updates, and, as always, happy coding and creating! 🚀🎮🎨
