Conducting Research Gamification- Dev Log 1

For this project my design issue that would be later turned into a game was wealth inequality. When researching wealth inequality I wanted to figure out if it was a rising issue or if it was fading out. and what are some things that cause wealth inequality in the first place. So I decided to dive in the beginning to research. There were a ton of different articles all sourced around wealth inequality. A lot of these articles were from a lot of nations around the world which allowed me to build a better understanding of not only wealth and equality within North America but if there were any trends that all countries outside followed as well.

A couple things that I've learned through my research is that inequality indeed has not slowed down but only continues to rise,  widening the gap between the 1% and everyone else.  Well the top 1% of people within a country continues to obtain more of the country's wealth each year, people in the middle class have generally stayed stagnant for 80 years. This can be chalked up to a lot of different things. For one thing, things like inflation really hurt the majority of people within a country and don't really hurt the top 1%.  This is because the top 1% of people within a country spread their wealth between a variety of assets and diversify their portfolio. For the rest of society this type of extreme diversification simply is not possible because of the gap of wealth. Therefore a lot of a person's investments rely solely on their house. With so much invested into one single asset, house inflation and crashes could be very devastating to the majority of people.

Furthermore most inequality can be chalked up to the top squeezing and exploiting the majority of people for their own benefit. for instance and housing a lot of the spikes and housing around the world are due to rising rent costs. A lot of people who own property are very wealthy people who don't mind raising the price up every couple of years. Since most people cannot afford to just not own a home they are forced into the market. creating more wealth for the top individuals and less well for everyone else.

For my game I really wanted to dive into how this exploitative nature happens and how it is encouraged in the current system we live in. For instance, analyzing the relationship between a boss and its employees and showcasing how most of the time your boss doesn't have your interests in mind when you are a part of a large corporation. As well as realizing and showcasing the profit-driven economy we all are too familiar with. The goal of this project is to showcase this issue in an interesting and fun light-hearted Way in order to keep players entertained without burdening them too much with, you know, the pains of the real world.

I feel like there's a lot of ways you could take a game with this topic. Playing with the perspective of an exploited employee could be interesting, especially game-play wise. Making the game hard if not impossible to win could be a fun way to get your message across. I also agree with the sentiment that the game should be more light-hearted. It could be hard for the player to enjoy the game-play if the narrative is stressing them out.
