Howdy,
My design challenge for the semester is to design a compelling resonant game that will address a relevant issue that people are currently facing. Naturally, I had to educate myself about the chosen topic, which in this case is the impact of social media on self-identity and social identity, in order to address it properly through game design. The majority of my research focused on the construction of self-identity, and how social media interaction interrupts that process. It also looked at different recommendations that other much more accredited academics have suggested in their own study.
To go over the highlights of my results, studies found that there is a significant correlation between social media use and self-identity construction. In other words, people often perceive their 'online persona' as the basis for creating a self-identity, since their online platforms are usually comprised of specific niche interests that help them connect with other similar-minded users/friends. Users come back to their online community because they feel connected and understood, a process referred to as 'identity confirmation.' However, platforms have started to take advantage of this process, using algorithms to recommend new products and trends, which are encrypted as 'personalization' or 'suggestions based on your interest.' The more one explores the internet, the more likely their identity will be shaped and skewed by the content they consume, a process referred to as 'identity formation.'
Gathered solutions from sources range from abstinence to changing one's perception about identity, and encouraging users to seek alternative connections. That being said, most recommendations found in the studies were more so targeted toward advertisers, showing them how to optimize ads on the platform.
As an avid social media user myself, I witness firsthand the power of the algorithm. Now the challenge comes down to capturing an accurate depiction of the identity confirmation-formation process within a game design context. The game will have to highlight the issues with social media algorithms and all of its flaws while maintaining high entertainment value. I also think it would be fun to add in some pop culture references.
That's all, thanks for reading all that. :)

Hi Kean!
I think the ways in which online advertisers are taking advantage of things like social media to ruthlessly advertise to their users is getting increasingly disturbing. The more developed these algorithms get, the more they can start to carve out each individual user's identity and interests, which leads to even more specific adverts. I once saw a Custom T-Shirt site advertising crazy specific T-Shirt designs to specific users because it found that user to have certain qualities, like a shirt that says "I'm a single mom with 2 adorable pugs, don't mess with me!"
Good luck on adapting your social media research to a game design, I'm excited to see what you come up with.
