So Ren'py is really fun. I feel like I'm finally getting the hang of it. In the future, I'd like to be able to customise the GUI a bit more but with this game, I feel like it's nice as it is!
I've already mentioned mentioned this before but this is adaptation of a short story that I wrote when I was 15. It was a short vent story about how I would often escape into manga and dating sims where things go wrong but ultimately gets better.
At the time, I desperately wanted to crawl into books or visual novels because in real life when things go wrong, they stay that way.
In real life if you die, you die. You don't always get the girl. You don't always win the championship.
I was feeling really disillusioned about that and I wrote a story about this girl who escaped into visual novels but was harshly pulled back into the real world.
The story ended at the line, "And there is no hero."
When I was adapting that short story into this game, I had a realisation that my philosophy has changed. Five years ago, when things went wrong and they didn't go back to "normal", it felt like the end of the world.
Nowadays, things go wrong all the time. Yet somehow, it's okay.
So after five years, there is a finally a happy ending for this beloved author-insert. Things go wrong. She's stuck in the code. But she finds a way to make her own happiness despite everything. I guess that it's all still a little messed up but she's doing okay.
Treasure Room (2010) / Nemu Youko
This is a oneshot from Nemu Youko's anthology manga. This story is about a girl who is a little bit of a hoarder then is transported into a world full of everything she's ever collected. As always, reading it yourself is way better than me describing it but it was so perfectly dreamy and whimsical.
When I first read it, I related so much to the girl. I also dreamt of being teleported into a pillow-y collection of everything I love.
The adaptation more closely resembles Treasure Room because both protagonists never leave the "treasure room". But it's still a happy ending.
Dreaming Mary (2014) / Accha
The original short story was something more similar to Dreaming Mary. Where the girl starts in the dream world then is mauled back into the real world.
The scenes where you're talking to Claire were not present and neither was the happy ending. The short story was the entire real-world scene with a downer ending. I really loved Dreaming Mary at the time and I still do but for some reason, I have a hard time with downer endings nowadays.
I have a game jam that I've got my eyes set on! It's an rpgmaker game jam and I really want try my hand at making a horror rpgmaker game. I've always loved those (duh) but I feel like I have a hard time creating scares. It will be our first ever horror game so I will try my very best!
I've also got another VN in the works! It'll be a short VN with one character and one setting, focused on one emotion. It's a little bit of a creative exercise ^^ We also have a special guest artist for that one!!
Thank you for supporting PM Studio and my indie game dev dreams!
Platonically, Asena
