The Journey of Leading a Game Jam: Lessons, Progress, and Future Plans

A Week of Inspired Leadership

This week has been a whirlwind of activity and learning for me. I've always admired leaders who inspire through active work and listening. In leading a game jam, I found myself embodying these values, immersing myself in the creation of a Nav Mesh compatible with the Unity terrain system, designing basic AI logic, and many more.

Shout out to one of our team members who has shown exceptional dedication, diving deep into learning about audio systems and working with audio scripting in Unity. To all those engaged in similar efforts, trust me, your hard work is both noticed and appreciated.

The Responsibility of Leadership

Just a fortnight away from the jam, there's still much to be accomplished. My journey into leadership during this game jam was unplanned. I entered with one goal in mind: to produce the best possible output as a team, especially since we had previously missed a submission deadline. As a Unity developer, the task of guiding our team felt natural, but I also recognize the significance of this role. It isn't about power, it's about providing the best opportunity for success to all team members. If you have any tips for me as a first-time game jam team leader, I am all ears!

Weekly Progress and Future Plans

The progress we've made this week has been exciting, with the creation of destructible buildings and developing enemy AI, to name a few. Looking ahead, I'm eager to experiment with sand VFX, additional weapon systems, mission and base systems, and more. While these areas are new to me, the learning process is as rewarding as it is challenging.

Spotlight on Team Effort

This week, one team member particularly caught my attention. Their interest in audio design and commitment to learning Unity has been nothing short of inspiring. I firmly believe that effort deserves recognition and am looking forward to sharing their progress with you in the future.

Countdown to the Game Jam

With less than two weeks to go, the pressure is definitely on. We still have many 3D models and VFX assets to create, but the anticipation makes this journey worthwhile. While game jams are generally deemed fun, I believe they're also an opportunity for growth and learning, especially for newer teams like ours.
