Hello Itch.io!
I am Rob Glenister, a game audio designer based in the UK. I currently work at Netspeak Games. Check out our game Sunshine Days, and check out the soundtrack I composed here!
I've been very fortunate in my career with regards to networking paying off and getting work that has lead to me being a full time audio designer. However at the start of my career, it was tough! Breaking into the industry takes time and often takes place while you have to hold down a full time job at the same.
I've always looked at asset stores and wondered if these packs could provide a legitimate source of extra income, especially for upcoming audio designers.
After chatting with my long time collaborator Peter K Sperring, we've decided to find out for ourselves! We plan to release a ton of music packs that are of a high quality, but really affordable.
This is our plan:
Our thinking is this: if we have 100 packs in stores, we only need to sell 1 of each pack per month to get a turnover of $1000 a month. This is a decent amount of passive income!
There are a lot of considerations, and I'm gonna list them as I think of them!
100 packs at 10 tracks per pack means we need to write at least ONE THOUSAND tracks of music! That is wild, but it's also exciting!
Will this make us money?
Will this drive us insane?
Is this a waste of time?
All these questions an more will be answered in this blog. I intend to keep this regularly updated. I hope it will shine a light onto whether composers can earn that extra cash from their unused music.
We have finished 2 music packs which you can find right here on Itch!
Above all else, we love creating new music. The opportunity to share it all is very exciting, but I'm also very keen to see if this will be a profitable venture. It's very hard to make money from the music you make, so hopefully this helps not just us, but also anyone else that wants to go on a similar journey!
If you're reading this far, give us a follow and keep up to date with the journey!
