Making UI come to life - Study of Persona 5

Deconstruction, Rebuild and Analysis

Day 2/9 - Catch My Drift Development

When I think of UI, I think the Persona series has done very well. It does not necessarily respect what is traditionally seen as good design, but it works so well. I will take inspiration for the game I am currently working on.

We will try to take inspiration from the day changing animation.

Persona is very dialogue heavy. The player is heavily stimulated from dialogue, exploration and combat. This animation provides relief. It happens over 12  x 60 frames. The first 6 seconds only shows the current date. The date changes over the next 2 seconds and the new date stays for 4 seconds.

My idea for my game is to have a car drift in front of the date, revealing the next day. It is on theme, and visually cool.

I start with this illustration.

How can we make this more stylistic (taking inspiration from P5)?

Maybe something like this.

When we put it all together [Rebuild stage], we get something like this.

This is close to the idea that I had in mind. At this stage, it is experimental but I am proud of how it came out.

Analysis:

Maybe the car should go slower, because this is a time for the player to breathe.
I will change the background. The player is looking at their car and the garage for a long time. I should provide some visual stimulus that breaks from that.
It is difficult to notice the date change. Even I had trouble at first. I think the second date should be a different color, like persona does it.

In summary, this is a positive direction for the UI style that I am trying to achieve. It looks good and is intuitive. I will make a post about the main menu when I start working on it.

Hi there. I am also a big fan of the series, and I was trying to incorporate their style in my drifting game as well. However, I have been able to find limited resources to help me with this. Could you share any ideas on where to get fonts similar to yours and UI elements as well?
