HOW I TAUGHT MYSELF BLENDER

Hey!

This is essentially just a blog on how I've taught myself how to use Blender over the past two years! Just a documentation of my journey and things I've done to help. I will also link tutorials, inspo and things that I like.

I am still in the process of teaching myself how to use Blender but I would say that I'm not really a beginner anymore. When I was a beginner I would stick to easy things that didn't require me to use many of the tools Blender has to offer as they were a bit daunting but now I've kind of passed that stage and I'm more confident on how to make things.

Currently I am in college in my last year (Year 13) and am enrolled on a Game Design course! In our first year we were taught all of the basic skills we needed to understand the basics of the necessary software. We began working with Blender and I honestly hated it at the beginning as it was something new that I didn't understand. So we finished working with Blender and moved onto another software and I didn't touch Blender for probably another 10 months as it was too daunting and confusing. Fast forward to my final project of the first year...I did a 2D animation!! (will link it below) It is a cottagecore aesthetic and I designed the house and character for it. I really enjoyed doing the animation and then made 2 more 2D animations! (note: I used Adobe Animate + Photoshop for all of my 2D animations) Now fast forward to the start of my second and last year...I made a concept for an animation and began doing it on Adobe Animate but it was so so so difficult to do as I needed to do a first person walk cycle with the camera. So I essentially scrapped all of the progress I had made and used it as a plan as I had everything blocked out for me already. So I took the risk and started making everything in Blender and it was so fun! Now I am making a 3D third person sandbox adventure game with my friends for my final college project!! My role in the team is environmental 3D modeller but I have had a play around with making the characters!! :))

Ramble over! These are all of the things that I have used to teach myself Blender!

YOUTUBE:

This is a youtube playlist I have made! It has tutorials from loads of different people and they cover a large amount of things :D

My favourites are the Grant Abbitt Low Poly Stylized Cottage Tutorials (there are many parts and he covers how to do EVERYTHING)

Obviously there is the Blender Doughnut Tutorial playlist by Blender Guru but I still haven't finished it aha!

OTHER RESCOURCES:

https://www.mixamo.com/

Mixamo is used to rig your characters! You dont need to do anything in Blender, you literally make ur character and import them into Mixamo and follow the steps and animate them however you like! I personally use it for walk cycles and poses :D

https://www.turbosquid.com/

TurboSquid is good for downloading free assets for your games/animations but you do have to pay for some of them. I personally onlyuse the free assets available for my builds.

https://substance3d.adobe.com/assets/allassets

Substance3D is a website you can download materials from, it is run by Adobe so you will need an Adobe account to access them. They have a really good range especially if you're modelling clothes and need materials.

I will probably update this when I've improved more but for now this is everything I use! :D

Here is my final project piece for my first year! It is a cottagecore house...I reworked the design and made it into a 3D model for the new game me and my friends are working on :DD
