Day one of My First Game Jam! I'm keeping this log for me to hold myself accountable for finishing this game jam.
Some preamble, the theme this time is 'Growth', which is a pretty fun one I think. I'm using this as an opportunity to learn how to use Ren'Py, this is the most programming I've done since my generator-making days haha. Having a lot of fun, in the seven hours since the start of the game jam I've drawn the 10 portraits I think I'll need for the game and two backgrounds. If that sounds impressive, it was pretty much just making four unshaded portraits! three of which had three different face options. The backgrounds were simple enough, a good exercise in perspective drawing. I hope I'm not on visuals for many other projects going forward, I enjoy art but I'm not all that confident with drawing character portraits and backgrounds yet. I guess that's what practice is supposed to help with, right?
I've learned the basics of Ren'Py today, so that's choices, if/else statements, variables, writing dialogue, and changing the displayed visuals. That should have me sorted for the whole of the project, if it doesn't then we'll get there when we get there. The biggest challenge at the moment is working out what to do for music, there are some good free tracks online I'll have to look into.
Well, that's my first dev log sorted. It feels weird to call myself a game dev now, but I guess I am! Neat.
See you tomorrow,
Large Rat
